Why doesn’t Sevenoaks have better takeaway choice?

Last night we tried Paprika, the new Indian Takeaway on St John’s Hill. But a few doors down from Ashique – a good restaurant and takeaway, next door to the excellent Jolley Fish and Chips and a hop, skip and a jump from Dominos, setting up a takeaway-only business was a bold move.

Having sampled the delicious menu (full of classics done well, delicate starters and huge potions of scrumptious specials) the bold but brave move looks to be paying off.

We ordered enough for four adults, plus enough for great bowls of leftovers the next day, including starters. The total was £61.90, comfortably comparable to others in the area.

St Johns Hill is rapidly becoming Sevenoaks’s takeaway quarter (shame available parking isn’t keeping up) – and the choice has deepened immensely since I moved to the area in early 2008, but for such an affluent and foodie town, we’re still severely lacking choice at home.

Paprika goes some way, it really is excellent, but then we do already have good Indian options (such as Bananaleaf Cuisine). If you don’t mind collecting your order by car, you can tap into the good (but pricey) Sun Do and local Pizza Express.

But for gourmet pizza options, Chinese options and – heaven forfend -  something slightly less mainstream such as Lebanese, Latin American cuisines or African, Sevenoaks offers nothing to your door.

I beg to be proven wrong, so if anyone knows of a decent Chinese takeaway that delivers, pray tell in our comments!

Even better, if you know of a slightly less than obvious option that can be brought to me while I sip wine at home, don’t hold your silence.

Totally agree. I moved to Sevenoaks a year ago and could not really believe that almost none of the takeaway places would deliver. If the wife is out and the kids are in bed then it is impossible to go out of the house and, well cooking dinner for one is not much fun, but Domino's is about the only other option. Good to see someone else giving delivery a go, I will try them out.

Local chefs cooking for you is a lovely idea (although I pity any chef trying to cook in my kitchen while being harrassed by my bonkers, massive puppy!) - as is a directory of takeaways that deliver...

And your plug is welcome ;) not currently needed but possibly soon - do you run intensive courses for those that have already had about 10 hours of lessons a few years ago?

    Hi Holly,
Typical Townie! I dunno city folk, want everything delivered! :-) (Only driver in your household....maybe you need a top quality local driving instructor.....but where to find one.....?!) Maybe a better service would be local takeaway chefs that come around and cook in? Now that would be nice! Maybe we need an online directory listing eateries including if they offer takeaway, if they deliver and price range?
    All the best

    Hi,

Replying from my other username :)

    Thanks for your replies!

We do have several food options available, but my beef is with the lack of delivery options. I love nice Chinese food, but Sun Do doesn't deliver and I've not found anywhere else with food anywhere near on par (though I'd LOVE to be proven wrong and given any tips!) the same with pizza, if you don't want Dominoes, you have to go and collect it. As the only driver in my household (sob sob) it frustrates me. It's about the only thing I miss about living in London!
