A STRONG VOICE FOR SEVENOAKS
By michaelfallon | Thursday, April 01, 2010, 21:59
I’m standing for re-election as Sevenoaks MP because I want to help change our country for the better. We've now had thirteen years of Labour mismanagement and higher taxation all round.
Britain is a great country that has lost its way. Our economy has stalled and unemployment is rising again; nearly a third of those out of work in Sevenoaks are under 25. We need to back small businesses and get the banks lending again.
I want to see a stronger society. There should be a firm annual limit on immigration, new incentives to help couples to stay together, and tougher policies on crime, including an end to early release and more powers for local magistrates.
Locally we need more grammar school places, a commitment to fund the new Knole Academy properly, a fairer government grant for Sevenoaks District Council, better protection of Green Belt land (especially against travellers) – and we want our Job Centre back.
Over the last thirteen years I have helped hundreds of constituents. Now I want to help change our country for the better. To do that, we have to change the government. I ask for your support when the election comes.

Hello Holly, as you asked for other candidate views - as Lib Dem candidate I believe that LGBT people should have equal rights in all the areas you outline and as enshrined by law. Thankfully society and successive governments have moved a long way on these important issues over the past 30 years. Best Wishes, Alan

ReportThanks for the emphatic reply, Michael, that's good to know. In terms of specifics, I think what I'm keen to ascertain (and would from all the candidates) is whether you agree that homosexual/bisexual/transgendered people are entitled to the same rights as heterosexuals, in terms of adoption, protection from harrassment, civil partnerships, housing etc.
Many thanks,
Holly

ReportDear Holly
This is nonsense - I have not voted against equal rights. The website theyworkforyou is extremely unreliable as it conflates different votes on different bills, and summarises in its own way. You would have to look at each specific vote before drawing any conclusion. I would be happy to answer any specific question you have on this.

ReportI have another question, Michael, I hope you can answer. According to TheyWorkForYou, you voted strongly against equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. Can you explain to Sevenoaks LGBT people why that is the case? As someone that believes in equality (not a sort-of version) for everyone, this troubles me.
Thanks,
Holly

ReportThanks for the speedy reply, Michael. As a Sevenoaks parent with my eldest approaching Year 5, I'm starting to think/worry about secondary schools. I want my daughter to go to a Grammar School if she passes her 11+, I'm concerned by the quality of state schools in the area but I don't want her to have to trek miles out of her hometown to get a good education.
If we get a Conservative government, is it a pledge of yours that you would push for a grammar school/campus in Sevenoaks itself?
Thanks,
Holly
