The mystery of the Otford door

We went for a lovely walk in Otford today, and strolling up Station Road, I spotted something I must have passed hundreds of times before but never seen. Perhaps because I always have my head in my phone...

Do you know how this lovely door came to be?

Anyway, it's a beautiful ornate wooden door set into the brick wall. So, does anyone know it's origins?

Our Twitter friend, @plebdeb, is equally intrigued and is going to ask a village expert, but do you know? Could it be connected to the old palace? Or one of the large village houses? Or perhaps the graveyard?

That door used to belong to Colet's Well. It now leads into the back of a house in Colet's Orchard, and presumably was the Colet's Well orchard door until the orchard was sold off in early seventies. There is another similar door into the garage (not such good quality) and the side door (which had to be replaced) into Station Road, also oak but not so ornate, was probably the same period - it could be as old as the wall, which is Tudor in parts, or it could be C18 like the house. The owner of Colet's Well doesn't know the actual date of the door, but you could get in touch with the Otford Historical Association, who used to inspect Colet's Well's `historical' bits every 10 years to make sure they were still standing. The shed in the picture was always inspected (and called a gazebo) as that too is heritage.
