Would you like to develop your skills as a local historian? Although in this class we will be tracing the origin and growth of a particular local village, Riverhead, the skills and knowledge you acquire can be used to search for the origin and growth of your own village or town. Beginning with old maps, estate papers and surveys we will search for medieval and early modern Riverhead, continuing into the Georgian period with E. Hasted's 18th century account. The Victorian community can be traced through the tithe maps of the 1830s, early OS maps and census returns; and finally we can chart 20th century growth from more recent OS maps and trade directories. We will be plotting the extent of growth in each period on a series of maps.
