TRAVEL: Special attractions around the world in 2012

Sevenoaks People will be featuring one of the destinations each month. We kick off with Corfu's cheese eating festival: 24 - 26 February 2012

On the last Sunday before Lent residents of the island of Corfu enjoy a weekend of Carnival celebrations to mark 'Cheese Eating Sunday' followed by 'Clean Monday'.

During this weekend Corfu town enjoys processions, music and parties in the street. According to the Greek Orthodox religion meat is a forbidden dish so macaroni cheese takes its place on the menu.

Clean Monday sees the celebrations continue but on this day cheese is replaced with squid, bean stew and bread. For visitors, it is the perfect excuse to visit the island without the summer crowds and to experience a truly local tradition.
